Mike Corbett - USA
Las Vegas Backgammon Champion
10/11/2009
Backgammon giant Mike Corbett is the winner of the 2009 Las Vegas Open 2009, defeating fellow giant Malcolm Davis at the main final. Another backgammon giant, Richard Munitz, took over the third place, while the fourth place in the top was taken by a Californian player named Jon Vietor who had made his comeback at the event.
Las Vegas Backgammon Open is one of the biggest and most important backgammon tournaments in the US. Organized by the Nevada Backgammon Association under the conduction of Howard Markowitz, a veteran backgammon player who also directs the World Backgammon Championship in Monte Carlo, the Las Vegas Open is a reminder to the end of the year.
This year, about 200 backgammon masters and fans, mostly from the US but with respectable British and Japanese delegations, crowded at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas between November 4th and 8th, 2009. Many of the masters stepped out with puffed up pockets. On top of the three giants who topped the main event, Richard Munitz had also won the doubles event, together with Ed Bennett, the winner of the $100 Saturday Jackpot side event, while two of the most likely to enter next giants of backgammon list – Matt Cohn-Geier and Stick Rice have both won the $2,000 Super Jackpot.
