Matt Cohn-Geier - USA

First American Backgammon Win

26/07/2010

Backgammon giant #15 Matt Cohn-Geier has won his first American Backgammon Tour event, the Minnesota Open Backgammon Championships held on the weekend of July 23-25 in Bloomington, Minnesota. Cohn-Geier has championed both the 22-players field Open competition and the Masters Jackpot, where he outplayed last year's Minnesota backgammon champion, Harvey Gillis.

It is the first major backgammon win for Matt Cohn-Grier, who had finished second at the ABT Las Vegas Open in 2008. Cohn-Grier has spent most of 2010 in Europe, playing several backgammon tournaments including the Nordic Open (where he was part of the losing World team at the Denmark vs. the World match), and the 35th World Backgammon Championship in Monte Carlo, where he dropped after the second round and got as far as the 5th round of the 1st consolation.

Other backgammon masters who played the Minnesota Open Backgammon Championships include Ray Fogerlund (who won the second consolation) and John O'Hagan, who prior to the tournament was the second highest rated player in ABT.
