Jake Jacobs - Singapore

Emperor of Japan Backgammon Open

05/10/2009

No. 14 backgammon giant Jack Jacobs ruled the 15th Japan Backgammon Open event held in Tokyo between September 20 and 22, 2009. Although he eventually lost the Japan Open main event (to local Noriyuki Hosaka, the same player he had lost to in last year's Japan Open semi-finals), the Singapore resident with American origins Jacobs has finished second at the prestigious backgammon event as well as grabbed the super jackpot first prize.

The 15th Japan Backgammon Open & Championship took place this year without Japan's no. 1 player, world backgammon champion Masayuki Mochizuki aka "Mochy", who preferred, or was obligated, to play at the World Series of Backgammon second leg, held at the same time in Prague. On top of the majority of Japanese backgammon players, the Japan Open was attended this year by many foreign players, most of them coming from nearby far eastern countries.

Jake Jacobs had stated in an online forum that Japan Open will be his closing event for 2009. Formerly one of the most active live tournament players in the American backgammon scene, Jacobs had attended only four events this year, and an average of 2-3 events a year in the past few years.
